When it comes to our health and fitness, the stakes are high. It’s a literal matter of life and death. After all, poor health leads to a shorter life and a lower quality of life, so it’s in our best interest to take care of ourselves. We owe it to ourselves to lead the happiest and healthiest life we can, and that’s easier said than done in a world of convenience that seeks to kill us with kindness. The insidious threats of the modern world of luxury are hard to overcome, because they’re hard to see, but knowing is half the battle, so here are the basics you need to know to get your body where you want it to be.

First and foremost, you’ll need to reassess your diet. Modern humans, and Americans in particular, depend entirely too much on processed foods. These food items are convenient and afford thanks to fillers and preservatives, but these seem additives rob them of much needed nutritional value and make them more addictive. (I’m looking at you, sugar.) Therefore, it’s in our best interest to replace these items with home cooked meals made with fresh ingredients. This will run you a little extra money and a lot of more time spent cooking, but it’s more than worth it when you start to find yourself having more energy and losing excess weight. There are a number of other benefits you can look forward to, and your body will thank you as you see those benefits immediately and over time.

Next, let’s talk about fitness. The problem with modern fitness is simple. We spend entirely too much time sitting. Whether we’re at work or at home, or even travelling, odds are we’re sitting, and this weakens our core muscles that would normally be keeping us upright. This can lead to chronic back pains, hernias, and more, so you’ll want to nip this problem in the bud sooner rather than later. You’ll want to first ensure that you get up off the couch and take a walk every once in awhile. Then, you can take it a step farther by investing in a standing desk, or a convertible desk, for your time spent at the office. As for tradition exercise, don’t feel like you need an expensive gym membership. You can get into shape with nothing more than what you can find at your local Kohl’s. The more important part is find a workout routine that addresses your unique needs,and then you need to stick with it. The seven minute workout, that you can find via YouTube, is a great comprehensive workout that, as the name implies takes very little time out of your day, but it can be a real struggle starting out, so you have to be careful not to be too discouraged. The important part is to keep trying and expect to struggle.
